What is bone china and how is it made?
Bone china (internationally known as Bone China) was invented by Thomas Frye in 1748 at the Bow workshop in the east of England. Thomas's porcelain factory is located near the cattle ranch and slaughterhouse in Essex, so he has many conditions to use animal bones for the process of creating the most famous porcelain in the world.
The manufacturing process of bone porcelain is quite similar to porcelain but requires more careful attention because the product needs to be reduced in softness and vitrification. The formula to create bone china is 25% kaolin clay, 25% minerals and 50% animal bone ash. Bone ash used to make bone china is made from cattle bones with a lower iron content. The first time, we will fire the rustic bone at a temperature of 1,230 - 1,250 degrees Celsius, the second time the enamel will be fired at 1,050 degrees Celsius and finally, it will be baked and decorated at 800-900 degrees Celsius. high and labor intensive, that's why bone china has always been a luxury and high-priced porcelain.
